Build a personal prompt library
You will have a library of five tested prompts, each with a title, a purpose and a placeholder to fill in.
Before you start
- A notes app or a document you can search
- A few prompts you have already used
- An AI assistant to test with
Why keep a library
A prompt that worked once will work again. Most people lose it in an old chat. A library turns your best prompts into tools you can find in ten seconds.
Start small. Five prompts you trust are worth more than a hundred you copied and never tried.
Step 1: Collect what you already use
- Open your recent chats and pick the five requests you made most often.
- Copy the version of each prompt that gave the best result.
- Paste all five into one document.
Step 2: Make each one reusable
Replace the parts that change each time with a placeholder in square brackets. Then add a title and a one-line note on when to use it.
Title: Customer email reply Use when: someone asks a question I have answered before. Prompt: Write a friendly reply to the email below in under 120 words. Use only the facts I give. If something is missing, ask me. Facts: [paste facts] Email: [paste email]
Step 3: Organise and test
Group prompts by the job they do, such as writing, planning or checking, not by tool. Put the group name in each title so search finds them.
Test each prompt once with fresh content. If the result is weaker than before, fix the prompt now, while it is open in front of you.
Keep it alive
- Add a prompt only after it has worked twice.
- Delete one whenever you add one, so the list stays short.
- Never save private details in a prompt. Use a placeholder.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Saving prompts you have never tested
- Leaving real names or client details inside the prompt
- Forgetting to write when to use each one
- Letting the list grow until you cannot find anything
Final checklist
- I have five prompts in one place
- Each has a title and a use note
- Each has placeholders for the parts that change
- I tested each with fresh content
