Pick your first AI tasks for a small business

You will have a scored list of ten jobs and five chosen to try, each with a simple way to know it worked.

Before you start

  • A small business or side business, or a team you support
  • A rough idea of where your week goes

Why start with five

Long lists of AI ideas lead to nothing done. Five jobs, each tested for a week, give you real answers about what helps your business.

Step 1: List ten jobs

Pick ten jobs from the list below, or add your own.

  • Replying to common customer questions
  • Writing social posts
  • Turning meeting notes into actions
  • Drafting quotes or proposals
  • Summarising long documents
  • Writing job descriptions
  • Planning the week
  • Following up with leads
  • Writing product or service descriptions
  • Preparing a monthly summary for yourself

Step 2: Score each job

Give each job a score from one to three on three questions: how often I do it, how much time it takes, and how easy it is to check the result. Add the three scores. Choose the five highest.

Skip jobs where a mistake would be costly or hard to undo until you are comfortable.

Step 3: Try them one at a time

Prompt you can copy

I run [type of business]. Help me with this job: [job]. Ask me the questions you need first. Then give me a first draft I can edit. Use only facts I give you.

  1. Time the job by hand before you start, if you can.
  2. Use the assistant for a week on that job only.
  3. Compare the time and the quality, then keep, adjust or drop it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying all ten at once
  • Starting with a job where mistakes are costly
  • Not timing the job before and after
  • Pasting customer details you should keep private

Final checklist

  • I listed and scored ten jobs
  • I chose five
  • I tried the first for a week
  • I decided to keep, adjust or drop it
