Qualify leads and draft outreach

You will have a scored list of ten leads and three first messages that you reviewed and edited.

Before you start

  • A short list of ten people or businesses you may contact
  • A description of your ideal customer
  • A spreadsheet

Step 1: Define a good lead

Write four things that make someone a good fit, such as size, location, the problem they have and whether they can pay. Keep it to four.

Step 2: Score your list

Give each lead one point for each fit you can confirm from public information. Mark anything you cannot confirm as unknown, not as yes.

Prompt you can copy

My ideal customer fits these four points: [points]. Below is public information about ten leads. For each, give a score out of four, and list which points are confirmed and which are unknown. Do not guess missing facts. [paste lead information]

Step 3: Draft a message for the top three

Prompt you can copy

Write a first message of up to 90 words to this lead: [lead details]. Mention one specific thing about them that comes from the information I gave you. Say how I might help in one sentence and ask one easy question. No pressure and no invented claims.

Edit each message so it sounds like you. Remove anything you cannot back up.

Respect the rules

  • Send each message yourself, one by one.
  • Follow the spam and privacy laws where you and the lead live.
  • Include a simple way to opt out and honour it.
  • Use only business information that is public.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sending unreviewed messages in bulk
  • Guessing facts about a lead
  • Using private data you should not have
  • Forgetting an opt-out

Final checklist

  • I wrote four fit points
  • I scored ten leads without guessing
  • I edited three messages
  • I checked the rules for sending
