Keep your AI setup in one folder you own

You will have one folder with three starter files that you can paste into any assistant in seconds.

Before you start

  • A folder you can create on your computer or drive
  • A text editor or notes app
  • About twenty minutes

Why keep it in a folder

Assistants change, plans change and chats disappear. If your setup lives only inside one tool, you start again each time you switch.

Plain text files are the most portable thing you can own. Any assistant can read them and you decide what to share.

Create three starter files

  1. Name the folder “AI setup”.
  2. Create a file called about-me with who you are, what you do and who you do it for, in six lines.
  3. Create a file called rules with how you want answers, for example short, plain and no jargon.
  4. Create a file called examples with two pieces of your own work you are proud of.

Keep each file under one page. If a file gets long, the assistant pays less attention to the parts that matter.

Use it in a chat

Prompt you can copy

Read the three notes below before you answer. Follow the rules. Use the examples to match my style. If you need something that is not in the notes, ask me. About me: [paste about-me] Rules: [paste rules] Examples: [paste examples] My request: [your request]

Some assistants let you attach files or save instructions. Use that if you like, but keep the folder as the master copy.

Keep it clean and private

  • Never put passwords, keys or client secrets in these files.
  • Update a file when you notice you keep correcting the same thing.
  • Review the folder once a month and delete what no longer applies.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Storing everything in one chat and losing it
  • Writing files so long they get ignored
  • Putting passwords or private details in the folder
  • Never updating the rules after your needs change

Final checklist

  • I created the AI setup folder
  • It has about-me, rules and examples files
  • Each file is under one page
  • I tested them in a real chat
  • No private details are inside
