Make a chatbot from your own content

You will have a folder of your best content, a clear set of rules and a tested assistant that says when it does not know.

Before you start

  • Ten or more pieces of your own writing, such as FAQs, articles or notes
  • A tool that lets you give an assistant your own documents
  • Time to test it with real questions

What you are building

A chatbot trained on your own content answers from what you wrote, not from the whole internet. That makes it safer and more useful for your customers, because answers match your real policies.

It is only as good as its sources. Gaps in your content become gaps in its answers.

Step 1: Gather and clean your content

  1. Collect your FAQs, service pages, prices and policies.
  2. Remove anything out of date or private.
  3. Check that you own the content or have permission to use it.
  4. Save each piece as a clear text file or document.

Step 2: Write the rules

Prompt you can copy

You answer questions for [business]. Use only the documents I provided. If the answer is not in them, say “I do not have that information” and suggest contacting [contact details]. Never invent prices, dates or policies. Keep answers under 100 words and friendly.

Step 3: Test with real questions

  1. Write twenty questions customers actually ask.
  2. Run each one and mark the answer right, wrong or invented.
  3. Fix wrong answers by improving the source document, not by patching the rules.
  4. Test five questions your content does not cover and check it says it does not know.

Step 4: Launch safely

  • Tell visitors they are talking to an assistant, not a person.
  • Give a clear way to reach a human.
  • Do not let it take payments or change bookings without a human check.
  • Review the questions it gets each month and update your content.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Giving it out-of-date documents
  • Skipping the test of questions it cannot answer
  • Hiding that it is an assistant
  • Letting it make promises about money or refunds

Final checklist

  • My content is current and mine to use
  • The rules say to use only my documents
  • I tested twenty real questions
  • Visitors can reach a human
