Make your page easy for AI search to cite

You will have a short audit of one page and a list of five fixes in order of effort.

Before you start

  • A page on your own website
  • A question your customers ask that the page should answer

How AI search picks pages

AI search tools look for pages that answer a question clearly, come from a source that seems trustworthy, and are easy to read as plain text. Nobody outside these tools can promise you a place in an answer, so aim to make your page a good source rather than to chase a trick.

Step 1: Pick one question

Write the question a customer would type, in their words. Check that your page answers it in the first few lines, not halfway down.

Step 2: Run the audit

Prompt you can copy

Here is the text of my web page and the question it should answer: [question]. [paste page text] Audit it. Tell me: does it answer the question directly in the first 100 words? Are the headings clear? Are there specific facts, prices or dates? Is it clear who wrote it and why they can be trusted? List the five biggest gaps, ranked by effort.

Treat the audit as advice from a reader, not an official score.

Step 3: Make the easy fixes

  • Put the direct answer first.
  • Use plain headings that match the questions people ask.
  • Add real facts: prices, places, dates and who you are.
  • Keep the main content as text, not inside images.
  • Update the page date when you change it.

Only state things that are true. Do not stuff the page with keywords.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Hiding the answer below a long introduction
  • Putting key facts inside images
  • Stuffing keywords
  • Expecting a guaranteed result

Final checklist

  • I picked one real customer question
  • The page answers it near the top
  • I made the easy fixes
  • I added real facts and my name or business
