Spot and fix generic AI design
You will have a six-point design check and one page improved with it.
Before you start
- A page, slide or graphic made with AI help
- A few minutes to look at it with fresh eyes
The signs of generic design
AI tools tend to produce the safe average: the same gradient, the same rounded cards, the same stock-style wording. Nothing is wrong, but nothing is yours either.
Six checks
- Colour: use two or three colours you chose on purpose, not the default set.
- Type: pick one font for headings and one for text, and keep them.
- Space: leave more room around the most important item.
- Words: replace generic lines like “Unlock your potential” with a specific promise.
- Pictures: use your own photos or consistent illustrations over generic ones.
- Focus: make one thing the clear first thing to look at.
Apply them to one page
Here is the text and layout of my page: [describe it]. Review it against these six checks: colour, type, space, words, pictures and focus. For each, say what looks generic and suggest one specific change. Keep my facts as they are.
Make the changes one at a time. If you cannot tell which helped, undo and try again.
Keep it readable
- Make sure text stands out clearly from its background.
- Keep text large enough to read on a phone.
- Do not rely on colour alone to show meaning.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing everything at once
- Using many fonts and colours
- Keeping generic slogans
- Making text hard to read for style
Final checklist
- I ran the six checks on one page
- I made each change separately
- The page has one clear first focus
- Text is easy to read on a phone
