Write hooks that earn attention
You will have ten hook options for one idea, a scored shortlist and the one you will use.
Before you start
- One post, reel or email you want to write
- An AI assistant
What a hook does
A hook is the first line or the first few seconds. Its only job is to make the right person keep going. It should promise something that the rest of the post delivers.
Step 1: Write ten options
My post is about: [idea]. It is for: [reader]. Write ten different opening lines, each under twelve words. Use these styles: a question, a number, a surprising fact I gave you, a mistake to avoid, a before and after. Do not promise anything the post does not cover. Do not invent facts.
Step 2: Score them
Give each hook one point for every yes.
- Would my reader know it is for them?
- Does it promise one clear thing?
- Is it true for what follows?
- Could I say it aloud in one breath?
Keep the top two and read them aloud. Pick the one that sounds like you.
Keep the promise honest
A hook that over-promises gets a click and loses trust. If the post cannot deliver on the hook, change the hook, not the post.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Writing one hook and stopping
- Promising something the post does not deliver
- Using a hook that fits anyone, so it speaks to no one
- Letting the assistant invent a statistic
Final checklist
- I wrote ten options
- I scored them with the four questions
- I read the top two aloud
- The post delivers on the hook
