Predict how viewers will react before you post
You will have a viewer panel, a reaction table for one script and a list of fixes.
Before you start
- A short video script
- A clear idea of who the video is for
What this can and cannot do
An assistant cannot predict real viewers. It can play different kinds of viewers and point out where a script is unclear, slow or off-putting. Treat it as a rehearsal, not a forecast.
Step 1: Build a panel
Describe three different viewers, based on real people you know or your real audience: one new to the topic, one expert, one in a hurry.
Step 2: Ask for reactions by moment
Viewers: [describe three]. Script: [paste] For each viewer, say at which line they would stop watching and why. Say which line each would find clearest. List the three points where the script is most likely to lose people. Be specific and do not exaggerate.
Step 3: Fix the weak points
- Change the first line if any viewer stops there.
- Cut anything all three skipped.
- Add an example where the newcomer was lost.
Step 4: Check with a real person
Show the fixed script to one real person and watch where they hesitate. One real reaction is worth more than any panel.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the panel as a forecast
- Making your viewers all like you
- Fixing everything at once
- Skipping a real-person check
Final checklist
- I built three different viewers
- I fixed the three weakest points
- A real person watched it
